Tool Scientists

We build tools that solve your target audience's problems

Sometimes, building a free tool for your audience to use is much more valuable than a blog post.

Let's talk

Why build a tool for your audience to use?

There are many case studies of tools producing incredible results for businesses. Here are just a few:

If you've ever worked with an SEO agency, you know that high quality links often go for $100 each. With tools, you can get the cost per link down to just a few dollars.

The reason that we're so passionate about tools is because they produce results. When it comes to inbound marketing, there's no other type of content that performs at the same level as a free tool on a consistent basis.

Type of ContentTrafficBacklinksGenerates leads?Difficulty to promote

Blog postsLow-HighLowYesHard
InfographicsLow-MediumMediumNoHard
VideosLow-HighLowNot usuallyMedium

Admittedly, these are subjective rankings, and depend on the specific piece of content. But in my years of experience as a content marketer, this is how I currently view and rate different types of content.

In particular, content like blog posts and infographics are much harder to promote than they used to be, since most people are spammed with more content than they can consume.

Here's how we build tools...

1
Discovery and planning

Tools are incredibly flexible. We can build small, simple tools, or large, complex tools that eventually become products of their own.

That's why we start off with you and your business' goals. From there, we'll have a good idea of what type of tool is right for you.

Then, we'll ask you a few questions about your target audience so that we can understand them better.

By identifying a few important problems in their lives, we can build a tool that solves one of those problems and is truly useful.

At this point, you'll get to pick a concept for the tool.

2
Mockup and Approval

With a tool idea in place, we get to work.

It starts with us creating a quick mockup of the tool that will show what it might look like and what features it will have.

Then, we send this to you for approval before any actual coding is done.

We keep iterating here until we have something here that everyone's happy with, that also fits your budget.

3
Tool Creation

The real work begins! (for us at least)

You don't have to do anything here, just let us do what we do best - code.

Turnaround time for the first version will depend on how complex the tool is, but it'll typically be pretty fast.

For simple tools, we'll have them ready in just a few days.

When the first version is ready, we'll let you know.

4
Tool Iteration

Now is the time for feedback, from both you and your target audience.

We'll get your thoughts first and make any changes to the tool you'd like.

Next, we'll submit it to a popular forum or group in your niche and get feedback from actual users.

From there, we take that feedback and make a final set of improvements.

5
Launch time

Your tool's done!

Time to promote it. If this is something you need help or guidance with, we can help with that and work something out.

Otherwise, reap the benefits of having a tool that provides great value to the audience you're trying to connect with.

One last thing...We do thorough testing of all tools, but there are still sometimes a few bugs initially. For the first week after delivery, we'll fix any bugs that come up, for free of course.

Why hire us?

Hi, I'm Dale, the founder of Tool Scientists. I've been a freelance content marketer for years, but my real passion lies in developing.

This puts me in a unique situation of understanding the needs of businesses from a content standpoint (and how to translate that content into links and customers), but to also have the skills to create content other than just blog posts (namely tools).

Overall, if we work together, you'll be working with someone who understands your marketing needs, and is going to produce a high quality tool in a reasonable amount of time, that's tailored to those needs.

Samples

Here's some other work we've done:

Keyworddit - The first ever Reddit keyword research tool (Keyworddit.com)

This tool scrapes a subreddit that the user inputs. It extract keywords from threads and comments, and then returns those that are relevant and have a search volume. It currently has 68 backlinks from 20 domains (source: majestic.com). The only promotion that was done was 40 outreach emails, and 60 other outreach contacts (tweets, blog comments, etc.)

Name Geniuses - A Business Naming Marketplace (NameGeniuses.com)

I'll admit, this is a full-fledged product, not just a tool. It allows business creators to crowdsource their new business' domain name. Still, the site generated over $1,600 in revenue during its first month of operation, generating 13 links with minimal promotion (including one from a Quick Sprout post).

Pricing

Every tool costs a different amount to create, so unfortunately we can't give you one specific price at this point.

During the initial discovery call, we'll nail down your budget and come up with a tool concept that matches it.

The one requirement we have is that you should have a minimum budget of $1,000 coming into this. You'll get a flat price for the entire project after the initial discovery phase.

  • Here's what you'll get...
  • A tool specifically designed to attract links and visitors
  • The full source code
  • 7 days of free support (bug fixing/small changes) after launch
  • Guidance (if needed) of how to promote your tool effectively

Frequently Asked Questions

How does payment work?

We won't have a price to give you until after an initial call. Once we have a price, we require a 50% deposit upfront, and the rest upon completion and delivery of your tool.

What programming languages do you use?

We primarily use Python for our tools. Unless you already have a python-based site, this means we will develop the tool as a standalone site (that you will own) or on a subdomain of your website.

We also use Javascript as needed (although mainly just for front-end functionality), and PHP if you have a WordPress site and would like to bake the tool right into your site.

We will discuss this in the consultation and find the best option for you.

How soon will I get my tool?

Our goal is to start working on it as soon as possible. If we're not too busy, and it's a small tool, you could have it in just a few days. In most cases, expect to have your tool within 2-3 weeks.

What if the tool breaks?

We rigorously test all tools before delivery. On top of that, we'll fix any bugs that come up for the first 7 days after launch, free of charge.

What if I want to improve or expand the tool in the future

That's great! It must mean the tool is producing great results already for you. We offer hourly freelance development as needed at a rate of $100/hour (broken up into 15 minute periods) if you'd like to expand the scope.
